This on-location show, taped at the Thursday night jazz series at Sakura Tokyo in Worcester, features a trio led by guitarist, composer and Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, Jane Miller, with Bob Simonelli on bass and Don Kirby on drums. Jane has recorded with guitarist Mick Goodrick as well as two CDs, as of this taping, with her own quartet -- the critically acclaimed Postcard and the new Secret Pockets.

Lynne Jackson/Mike Palter Brown Bag Concert Part I (7/17/96)

This Brown Bag Concert, a tribute to Irving Berlin by the sublime cabaret jazz duo (and real-life spouses) Lynne Jackson and Mike Palter, with Jim Repa on reeds, garnered Studio 3 the award for best cable program series in New England produced by a woman from the New England Chapter of Women in Cable and Telecommunications in 1997. The internationally acclaimed duo’s performances include Carnegie Hall, L.A.’s Jazz Bakery and Maybeck Recital Hall, and concerts in Normandy, France commemorating the 51st anniversary of the end of World War II. They performed their song “We Dream a Brighter Day,” co-written with Arthur Hamilton, at the 40th anniversary of the United Nations.

This very special Brown Bag Concert features a new ensemble led by Memphis-born James Williams, one of the most influential pianists of his generation (James succumbed to cancer much to young at age 53 on July 20, 2004), whose career included four years with the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Intensive Care Unit blends jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel and features the extraordinary voices of Miles Griffith and Roger Holland, both alumni of the Boys Choir of Harlem.

This special Brown Bag Concert at Mechanics Hall features the “First Family” of the Worcester music scene, Valerie and Walter Crocket, who took a decade off to raise a family after performing with two legendary local bands -- Zonkeraz and Crockett. (Sadly, the much beloved Valerie lost a three-year battle with leiomyosarcoma on 10/4/09 at age 53.) The Crocketts perform in support of their CD Unbutton Your Heart, released on the Daring label and distributed nationally by Rounder Records. The concert features special guest Emil Haddad on flugelhorn.

The 7th Annual Jazz at Sunset Concert Series presents Providence-based pianist and composer Joe Parillo, Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Rhode Island. He's written and arranged music for two jazz ballets and several theatre and film projects, including over 25 children's theatre productions, and is a member of the BMI Lehman-Engel Musical Theatre Workshops in New York. The ensemble performs Latin-inspired originals from their fourth CD, Block Island Summer on Neoga Records.

At Mechanics Hall in Worcester, the concert features a trio led by versatile pianist Joyce DiCamillo, who’s not only performed with such jazz greats as Phil Woods and Nick Brignola, but also comedian Joan Rivers and pop star Donna Summer. Her Connecticut-based trio, together for over 15 years, has opened for such artists as Dizzie Gillespie, Nancy Wilson, and the Count Basie Orchestra. When tenor saxophonist Houston Person heard them at their steady gig at the Empire Hotel in New York, he was so impressed he asked if he could record with them. The result was their second CD, Freelancin', released in October 1996 on Seaside Records.

Their CD, Major and Minor Swing, recently released on Brownstone Recordings, is a salute to two famous swinging combos: the Nat King Cole Trio and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, featuring the Gypsy Jazz sound of violinist Stephane Grappelli and guitarist Django Reinhardt. With special guest Harry Skoler on clarinet.
