Paul Holmberg - Biography
Biography - Discography

I was born in Jamaica Plain, Boston on April 10, 1934. We moved to Oxford in 1940 where I still live today. My father was from Sweden and Mother was of Danish decent. There was always music and dancing in the house. In high school I was digging Louis Armstrong until Fred Murphy moved to town. From that point on we went everywhere. The Celebrity Club in Providence, Storyville, Jazz Workshop in Boston, Melody Club in Lynn, McGann's in Leominster and others. I got married in 1960 and continued to visit clubs including Lennies on the turnpike and Sandy's Jazz Revival. We also went to the Newport Jazz Festival until the idiots shut it down the final night with Dionne Warwick singing "What The World Needs Now Is Love Sweet Love!" Years after the Aboody family presented a wonderful array of Jazz at their El Morocco in Worcester where I did most of my recording. Also Chan's in Woonsocket has been a favorite club. In recent years I have been very fortunate to go to LA and attend many west coast jazz concerts presented by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute including three or four trips to the Lighthouse where it all started. I have been very lucky to hang out with people like Vince Caplette, Emil Haddad, Nick Brigola, Clark Terry, Tito Puente and my man Charlie "The Whale" Lake. In the beginning when Murph and I were doing our thing we thought we were the hippest. We called the older cats "Moldy Figs". I still get Downbeat Magazine and when I read the names of today's players, guess who the Moldy Fig is now!
